Topological analysis of tapped granular media using persistent homology.

چکیده
We use the first Betti number of a complex to analyze the morphological structure of granular samples in mechanical equilibrium. We investigate two-dimensional granular packings after a tapping process by means of both simulations and experiments. States with equal packing fraction obtained with different tapping intensities are distinguished after the introduction of a filtration parameter which determines the particles (nodes in the network) that are joined by an edge. This is accomplished by just using the position of the particles obtained experimentally and no other information about the possible contacts, or magnitude of forces.

Separating Topological Noise from Features Using Persistent Entropy
Persistent homology appears as a fundamental tool in Topological Data Analysis. It studies the evolution of k−dimensional holes along a sequence of simplicial complexes (i.e. a filtration). The set of intervals representing birth and death times of k−dimensional holes along such sequence is called the persistence barcode. k−dimensional holes with short lifetimes are informally considered to be ...
متن کاملPersistent Homology of Finite Topological Spaces
We introduce homology and finite topological spaces. From the basis of that introduction, persistent homology is applied to finite spaces. We prove an equivalence between persistent homology and normal homology in the context of finite topological spaces and introduce an extended pseudometric on finite topological spaces, using the results of Minian.
متن کاملPersistent Homology Guided Exploration of Time-Varying Graphs
Topological data analysis is an emerging area in exploratory data analysis and data mining. Its main tool, persistent homology, has become a popular technique to study the structure of complex, high-dimensional data. In this paper, we propose a novel method using persistent homology to quantify the perturbation of features that occur in time-varying graphs. Specifically, we slice the graph data...
متن کاملApplications of Zigzag Persistence to Topological Data Analysis
The theory of zigzag persistence is a substantial extension of persistent homology, and its development has enabled the investigation of several unexplored avenues in the area of topological data analysis. In this paper, we discuss three applications of zigzag persistence: topological bootstrapping, parameter thresholding, and the comparison of witness complexes.
متن کاملStochastic Multiresolution Persistent Homology Kernel
We introduce a new topological feature representation for point cloud objects. Specifically, we construct a Stochastic Multiresolution Persistent Homology (SMURPH) kernel which represents an object’s persistent homology at different resolutions. Under the SMURPH kernel two objects are similar if they have similar number and sizes of “holes” at these resolutions. Our multiresolution kernel can c...
